The musician who composed the song featured on the US Air Force’s recent Super Bowl half-time advert, which The White Stripes accused of being a re-recorded version of their song ‘Fell In Love With A Girl’, has apologized to the duo.

Freelance composer Kem Krafthas said that similarities between his instrumental advert song, aired on February 7 during the televised sporting event and Jack and Meg White’s 2002 hit were coincidental.

Listen to the two songs by clicking on the videos below.

“I’m sorry it sounds the same,” Kraft told The New York Times. “It wasn’t my intention, truly, truly, truly.”

The White Stripes had threatened to take action against the Air Force over the song, saying they believe their song had been “re-recorded and used without permission”.

Kraft said that he had originally submitted three songs for the advert and, after one was chosen, altered it to “beef it up”. Mike Lee, of the Fast Forward Productions company in charge of the advert, said he hadn’t heard ‘Fell In Love With A Girl’. “I had no idea there was similarity until after the fact,” he said.

He added that he was open to discussions with the band. He said he would chat if they “want to call me and talk to me – as far as I’m concerned, I’m responsible for this. Just me”.

Kem Kraft

Who hasn’t wanted to be a rock star, join a band or play electric guitar? Music resonates, moves and inspires us. Strummed through the fingers of The Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White, somehow it does more. Such is the premise of It Might Get Loud, a new documentary conceived by producer Thomas Tull.

It Might Get Loud isn’t like any other rock’n roll documentary. Filmed through the eyes of three virtuosos from three different generations, audiences get up close and personal, discovering how a furniture upholsterer from Detroit, a studio musician and painter from London and a seventeen–year–old Dublin schoolboy, each used the electric guitar to develop their unique sound and rise to the pantheon of superstar. Rare discussions are provoked as we travel with Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White to influential locations of their pasts. Born from the experience is intimate access to the creative genesis of each legend, such as Link Wray’s “Rumble’s” searing impression upon Jimmy Page, who surprises audiences with an impromptu air guitar performance. But that’s only the beginning.

While each guitarist describes his own musical rebellion, a rock’n roll summit is being arranged. Set on an empty soundstage, the musicians come together, crank up the amps and play. They also share their influences, swap stories, and teach each other songs. During the summit Page’s double–neck guitar, The Edge’s array of effects pedals and White’s new mic, custom built into his guitar, go live. The musical journey is joined by visual grandeur too. We see the stone halls of Headley Grange where “Stairway to Heaven” was composed, visit a haunting Tennessee farmhouse where Jack White writes a song on–camera, and eavesdrop inside the dimly lit Dublin studio where The Edge lays down initial guitar tracks for U2’s forthcoming single. The images, like the stories, will linger in the mind long after the reverb fades.

It Might Get Loud might not affect how you play guitar, but it will change how you listen. The film is directed and produced by An Inconvenient Truth’s Davis Guggenheim, and produced by Thomas Tull, Lesley Chilcott and Peter Afterman.

Jack White has revealed that he had second thoughts about going public with his new band The Dead Weather, fearing critics would blast him for having too many musical projects.

White is fronting The Dead Weather with Alison Mosshart of The Kills, Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Dean Fertita and bassist Jack Lawrence.

But he worried about starting his third collaboration because he didn’t want fans to assume he was only working with Mosshart to recreate the success of their respective rock duos.

He tells Uncut magazine, “There was a self-consciousness, I think, but it was after the fact. When we started we didn’t even know we were making a record or starting a band.

“But when you’re finishing a project you remember, ‘Oh that’s right, we have to release this to the lions now.’ And people are going to say, ‘Oh right, they’re both in two-piece guy/girl bands.’ They’re going to think we did it on purpose.”

And White admits he never intended to start another band – but he couldn’t deny the chemistry that sparked between The Dead Weather members.

He adds: “It was a happy accident. Everybody involved really inspired each other. If we’re hanging out and it’s really working, it’s unfair for me to say, ‘Ok sorry. I have this other successful band. Sorry, too busy.’ That would be a shame.”

When Jack White announced he was starting up another new band, the Dead Weather, earlier this year, White Stripes fans wondered when they’d see another album of Jack and Meg songs. But now White says that with drummer Meg overcoming the anxiety issues that derailed a tour in September 2007, he doesn’t think new White Stripes material will be “too far off. Maybe next year.” This is obviously amazing news for the band’s fans, who initially suspected the Stripes’ hasty withdrawal from the road meant splitsville. “Nothing of the sort,” Jack tells Music Radar.

White says the sudden return to the road took its toll on Meg, “and we had to take a break.” White tells Music Radar that he was on tour with the Raconteurs for about a year before resuming business with the Stripes, but “Meg had come from a dead-halt for a year and went right back into that madness,” he says. “Meg is a very shy girl, a very quiet and shy person. To go full-speed from a dead-halt is overwhelming.” Meg is now engaged to Jackson Smith, the son of Patti Smith and the MC5’s Fred “Sonic” Smith.

“People don’t really understand. They think you go up on stage and you’re having a blast, like you’re partying or some shit,” White continues. “That’s not the case. It’s hard work to go on tour.” As for what fans can expect from the next White Stripes studio offering, White says its too early to say, but that he and Meg “had recorded a couple of songs at the new studio, [and] I talked to her about coming by” this summer, after the Dead Weather does some summer shows.

In February, Jack and Meg took the stage together for the first time in two years to bid farewell to Conan O’Brien’s late-night show before he took off for L.A. to host The Tonight Show. O’Brien spoke to Rolling Stone about his special relationship with the duo, who appeared on his stage many times: “There has always been a childlike silliness to our show, and I’d like to think there’s been a silly sweetness to our show. There’s a sweetness to the White Stripes — there’s the hard rock but there’s this sweetness that I think resonates a little bit with our show and it’s always been a good fit.”

The Dead Weather have announced their very show for the public, set to take place in New York next week.

The project features The White Stripes’ Jack White and The Kills’ Alison Mosshart, along with Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs and Dean Fertita of Queens Of The Stone Age. The new group recently performed a showcase in the offices of White’s label Third Man Records in Nashville on March 11 in front of 150 people.

The band are currently gearing up for the release of their album “Horehound”, which was recorded at Third Man Studios earlier this year, and will be released in June.

The album was produced by White and will feature lead single “Hang You From The Heavens”, which you can hear by clicking on the video here. Plus see Thedeadweather.com for more information.

The single will be backed up by a cover of Tubeway Army’s “Are Friends Electric?”, and is available on iTunes now.
