Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has said he believes that the band’s next studio album will be their “heaviest album yet”.

The group are currently demoing songs for the record, which will be produced by Butch Vig.

Grohl said that unlike their last two albums, which were recorded at Studio 606 in California, their next effort would be tracked at his home.

When asked about potential noise complaints from neighbours, the singer told Rolling Stone: “We’re doing a test on Monday.”

He added: “I think this could be our heaviest album yet.”

Meanwhile, Grohl is also working on a new record with Them Crooked Vultures.

When is the right time to release a greatest-hits record? After news broke that Britney Spears would be releasing a retrospective this fall — the 27-year-old’s third hits disc — and that Foo Fighters and Fall Out Boy would be doing the same, fans began arguing the point. Now the Foos’ own Dave Grohl has weighed in on the debate, telling the BBC that collections often feel like “an obituary.” Though the Foo Fighters’ 16-track Greatest Hits is out this week, Grohl reveals the band was asked to do a hits LP earlier in their career — and he refused. “They started asking about four years ago, and we said, ‘Don’t we need some hits?’ ” he said.

Grohl and Co. recorded two brand-new songs for this set, “Wheels” and “Word Forward.” But Grohl argues, “It still seems premature because we’re still a functioning, active band. … It’s like a CliffsNotes version of what we’ve been doing for the last 15 years.” He even quibbled with the album’s track list: “I think there are better songs than some of those.”

Look back at the rise of grunge in photos of Nirvana, Soundgarden and others.

Fall Out Boy — with only six years’ of music under their belt — are releasing their greatest hits collection Believers Never Die on November 17th. Sly and the Family Stone famously released a hits LP in 1970 after just three years of existence. So you tell us: When is it too early to release a greatest-hits compilation?

Foo Fighters have teamed up with Facebook to stream a show live on the social-networking website.

As the rockers are releasing their ‘Greatest Hits’ album on November 2, they’ll celebrate by performing live from their own Studio 606 in California on Friday (October 30).

A statement on the band’s website reads: “In a one-time only event commemorating their 15 years as a band and their first ever Greatest Hits compilation, Foo Fighters will perform an exclusive concert this Friday October 30th at 7pm (PT) / 10pm (ET).”

“In what will essentially be their only U.S. concert appearance in support of Greatest Hits.”

“Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel and Chris Shiflett will bang out a career-spanning set webcast over both Facebook and Livestream, while allowing fans to comment, make requests and otherwise interact with the band in real time via Facebook and Twitter.”
Source: RollingStone.com

The video for “Wheels,” the Foo Fighters’ first single off their upcoming best-of collection Greatest Hits, debuted over at MTV.com. Like the band’s clip for “The Pretender,” also directed by Sam Brown, “Wheels” is a low-key affair, with Dave Grohl and the gang simply performing in the studio. It’s a far cry from those fun Foo videos of yore: the faux Mentos commercials and the fever dreams with giant hands and Tenacious D wreaking havoc on an airplane.

“Wheels” rejoins Grohl with the producer who helped thrust his former band into the mainstream, Butch Vig, but their collaboration 18 years later is far removed from anything that would appear on Nevermind. “Wheels” finds the Foo at their most adult contemporary since “Big Me,” a track that seems like it was snatched off Bon Jovi’s Lost Highway. Maybe Grohl is just saving his energy, considering he’ll likely spend the better part of the next few months back behind the drums with his supergroup side project Them Crooked Vultures.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, Greatest Hits will feature one more Vig-produced new song, dubbed “Word Forward,” plus 14 more of the Grammy-winning band’s biggest hits. The deluxe version of GH will come with a bonus DVD featuring all those Foo music videos, including “Wheels,” plus some live performance footage. The collection is due out November 3rd.

Foo Fighters will commemorate the group’s 15th anniversary with the Nov. 3 release of “Foo Fighters Greatest Hits” on Roswell/RCA. The group recorded two new songs for the set – “Word Forward” and “Wheels,” which the quartet debuted at a July 4 barbecue honoring military heroes at the White House – with producer Butch Vig at the Foos’ own 606 studio. They’ll join Grammy Award-winning songs such as “The Pretender,” “All My Life” and “Learn To Fly,” along with “Best Of You,” “Times Like These,” “My Hero, “Everlong” and others.

The release of “Greatest Hits” will come at a time the individual Foos are dispersed to other projects. Founder and leader Dave Grohl is working with Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones and Josh Home of Queens Of The Stone Age in Them Crooked Vultures, whose debut album is due out in October. And bassist Nate Mendel is touring with the reunited Sunny Day Real Estate, which is also releasing remastered versions of 1994′s “Diary” and 1995′s “LP2,” each with two bonus tracks.

Mendel tells Billboard.com that the Foos’ hiatus is “kind of open-ended. We were pretty much planning to take this year off and start writing. This fall or winter we’ll probably start writing new Foo Fighters stuff.”

Mendel, meanwhile, is spending his time gearing up for the Sunny Day Real Estate tour, which kicks off Sept. 17 in Vancouver. “It’s fun to do something different. You need some variety,” Mendel says. “I’ve always loved those two Sunny Day records that I played on…and I like the other musicians in the band, so I wanted to just get together and re-live the whole experience.”

But Mendel and his Sunny Day are “on egg shells” about whether the reunion will lead to new music from the group. “Any old wounds from the past, no one wants to bring them up,” he explains. “We just want to focus on positive things, and you start writing new songs and that opens up a whole new can of worms. And those of us that are still playing in bands are pretty busy, too.

“One thing I didn’t know before we start this and I know now is we could make another record. We get along. We still have a connection that would allow us to make music. So if the will and time is there, it’s a possibility at least.”

As for Grohl’s endeavor, Mendel says he started hearing about the group earlier this year and has had a chance to see Them Crooked Vultures in the studio. “They’re great,” Mendel says, adding with a laugh that “it’s a different dynamic, though. It’s interesting to see (Grohl) not being in charge.”

The Foo Fighters will take a short break from their extended hiatus when they play a very special Fourth of July party this Saturday — at the White House! Rolling Stone has learned that the band will perform a short set as part of the annual festivities on the South Lawn, which has an unblemished view of the capital’s elaborate fireworks display. Earlier this week, President Obama invited staffers and their immediate families to the official First Family celebration; and it should be noted that back in January, it was many of those same staffers who campaigned for the Arcade Fire to play their much-deserved victory ball on inauguration night.

Frontman Dave Grohl, who’s been on full-time daddy duty since second daughter Harper was born on April 17th, is known to get antsy in between albums, but with bassist Nate Mendel reuniting his original band, Sunny Day Real Estate, for a national tour that kicks off in September, and word spreading of a possible Grohl side-project involving Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones and Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, any Foos activity would have been a complete surprise, never mind this unexpected booking. To that end, when we ran into the rocker near his current home turf — L.A.’s San Fernando Valley — Grohl was visibly excited about the one-off gig in D.C. (the city where he honed his punk rock chops as a teen living in nearby Alexandria, Virginia) and the opportunity to play for “Him.” A rep for the band would not confirm the booking when contacted by RS.

If you’ve ever wanted to see Dave Grohl rock for Neil Diamond, your moment has arrived. Diamond, 2008’s MusiCares Person of the Year, will be honored at a ceremony featuring performances by the Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Jennifer Hudson and the honoree himself. The gala will take place Friday, February 6th — two days before the Grammys — at Los Angeles’ Convention Center. Proceeds from the event will benefit the MusiCares program, which ensures that music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical and personal need.

Over the years, Diamond’s charitable contributions have been well-documented, and recently the singer donated to efforts like hurricane relief in the wake of Texas’ Hurricane Ike. Diamond joins past honorees including Brian Wilson, Bono, Paul Simon, Sting, Aretha Franklin and many more over the award’s 19-year history. In addition to the all-star concert lineup, the night will also feature a silent auction, with many “one-of-a-kind celebrity memorabilia” available during an online auction. Additional performers for the night include Adele, Tim McGraw, Josh Groban and Raul Malo. Performers for the 51st annual Grammys Awards have not yet been announced, but it’s a safe bet that some of the artists performing at the MusiCares ceremony will double up and play the actual awards show as well.
