CREED recently entered the studio to begin recording its first new album in eight years.

“We’re excited to share (the new music) with our fans, and we really have a lot we want to prove” after a five-year hiatus, singer Scott Stapp told Billboard.com. He said CREED — which hits the road August 6 for a 10-week tour — has “13, 14 songs that we would consider as album keepers” for the group’s first set of new material since 2001′s “Weathered”. We’ve written more than that, but we’ve got this many that are fighting for a spot on the record. So we’re in a good place.” The group is recording in Nashville with producer Howard Benson.

With the reunited band going out on a summer tour for the first time since disbanding in 2004, Stapp told The Pulse of Radio that he felt it was important for them to make new music together too. “From the beginning, I was ‘new record, new record,’ but as we all had been apart for a while, there was, you know, ‘Well, how is everybody now?’” he said. “The thing that really pushed us through that is to be able to talk about our wives and our children and have that common bond of family. I think it allowed the trust level to move a little faster, and soon after that is when everyone was fully committed to making a record.”

Stapp told Billboard.com that the band hopes to have the album completed by the end of June, with a tentative August release in the works.

The record’s tentative title is “Full Circle”.

CREED will begin its comeback tour on August 6 in Pittsburgh.

On May 6, Greg Gutfeld of Fox News’ “Red Eye” show conducted an interview with CREED members Scott Stapp and Mark Tremonti about their decision to reunite. Watch the five-minute chat below.

As previously reported, ALTER BRIDGE singer Myles Kennedy has posted a message online in which he said that the band will carry on, despite the fact that three members are part of this summer’s CREED reunion. Kennedy wrote, “Many of you are wondering how this CREED reunion tour will affect the future of ALTER BRIDGE. No worries, it won’t. I can assure you that as soon as they finish in October, we will move forward. Contrary to false statements that might lead you to believe otherwise, ALTER BRIDGE continues to be paramount to the four of us. The guys have my full support. It’s a very complex situation to say the least.”

Kennedy also wrote that the third ALTER BRIDGE record is “well on its way,” adding, “The guys will embark on their reunion tour, I will make my record, and then we will carry on.”

The former MAYFIELD FOUR vocalist revealed that he is working on a solo album, which he described as “dreamy” and more “singer/songwriter.”

CREED guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips formed ALTER BRIDGE with Kennedy after CREED split in 2004.

CREED announced its reunion last week, with Tremonti, Marshall and Phillips again working with frontman Scott Stapp. A two-month tour will begin on August 6 in Pittsburgh, with a new album in the works as well.

Creed were one of the most talked-about bands of the ’90s — beloved by devotees drawn to their bombastic anthems, loathed by listeners who dubbed them a third-rate Pearl Jam. The Grammy winners from Florida sold 25 million copies of their three studio albums (My Own Prison, Human Clay and Weathered) before bitterly splitting in June 2004, when guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips joined singer-guitarist Myles Kennedy as Alter Bridge. And now that the band has announced its reunion — which frontman Scott Stapp called “a renewing and a rebirth” when he spoke with Rolling Stone — fans are speaking out in droves.

“You know what, I’m going to say it. Creed were awesome. Everyone loves to make fun of them (even this magazine, who by the way put them on the cover once), but they have sold millions of albums, influenced a lot of today’s bands, and still get radio play. Yes we all know Scott had more problems than Chris Brown, but he was a great singer. And for all the people who call them a Pearl Jam rip-off are sadly mistaken, every band has influences, early STP is similar to Pearl Jam but not the same. I love both STP and Creed and neither are rip-offs.”

“This is a major bummer… What about all those interviews Tremonti, Phillips, and Marshall gave when Creed broke up? Tremonti said a reunion would be like getting a bunch of Vietnam vets back together. Marshall said he never really liked Stapp, they just got along for the band. Five years after their highly acrimonious split, Creed are reforming for a new album and an American tour, which kicks off August 6th in Pittsburgh and runs through October 14th. “I wouldn’t call it a reunion,” says singer Scott Stapp. “It’s a renewing and a rebirth. I missed my boys and wanted to create music with them again. We’re all thrilled to have a second chance to make a first impression.”

The reconciliation began last December when Stapp reached out to Creed guitarist Mark Tremonti. They agreed to meet up at the Hard Rock Hotel in Florida before Stapp sang the “National Anthem” at the Champs Sports Bowl. “I was nervous, but also excited because I knew Mark would bring nothing but positivity,” says Stapp. “We exchanged family pictures and within 20 minutes we were jamming on acoustic guitars and talking about new songs.” They soon met up with drummer Scott Phillips and bassist Brian Marshall, who left Creed in 2000 but is returning for the new album and tour. “At that meeting we were collectively saying, ‘Hey man, I’m sorry if I hurt you or my choices did anything to cause you any pain. I have nothing but love and forgiveness for you and I hope you can forgive me. It’s all part of the process of reflection and not looking back at the six months out of 10 years that were trying.”

Stapp and Tremonti already have six demos for the new album, which they plan on recording shortly in Nashville. They are currently looking for a producer. “We’re reached out to Brendan O’Brien, Mutt Lange, Bob Rock, Steve Lillywhite and six or seven more,” says Stapp. “We want to put ourselves around the best and have them bring out the best in us and challenge us as artists.” The likely title track is “Full Circle.” “It’s a favorite for all of us,” says Stapp. “It really defines and articulates, melody-wise and lyrically, what’s happened with us. We’ve come full circle and it’s a great place to be. The goal is get release the first single before the tour and have the album come out during the tour or right after.”

What’s the status of Stapp’s long-in-the-works second solo disc? “I’m not really thinking about that right now,” he says. “It would be irresponsible for me to think about anything but Creed. This band is my first love and a first love that’s stood the test of time. It’s not hard to step away from any kind of personal agenda when you are totally fulfilled.”

Sources reported last year that there were “significant dollars” on the table for a CREED trek, although a spokesperson for teh band’s record label, Wind-Up, said at the time, “There have been some talks, but it would be premature to comment on them at this time.” CREED disbanded in June of 2004, with singer Scott Stapp pursuing a solo career and the other three members of the group forming ALTER BRIDGE with singer Myles Kennedy.

Since leaving CREED, Scott Stapp has not had a smooth ride. He has been arrested for domestic abuse and public drunkenness, gotten into a fight in a hotel with members of311, been to rehab and was scandalized by a sex tape that surfaced featuring him and Kid Rock on a bus with several women.

However, Stapp is now said to be “in prime physical and mental condition” and recently returned from playing overseas for U.S. troops.
