30 Seconds To Mars are filming a video for the track ‘Kings And Queens’ in and around Los Angeles.

MTV recently went on set with the band as they filmed a segment with a load of fixed gear bikers riding through the streets at night and frontman Jared Leto explained the idea behind the sequence:

“I think this city is a beautiful place at night, and we have these empty streets, and it’s kind of a haunting, forgotten landscape … very serene,” the singer said. “It’s about reclaiming public spaces. It’s been an incredible adventure, but it’s also been really difficult, because there are so many people, and we’re shutting down streets of Los Angeles, downtown, bridges, some tunnels, Hollywood Boulevard, Santa Monica Pier, we’ll be up on Mulholland [Drive], overlooking the city.

But the idea, the night rides, I just had some friends that were doing Critical Mass and Crank Mob and People’s Ride in L.A. And it’s that sort of serendipitous thing, where people started talking to me about it in my life, and then my friend got a fixed gear, and then another friend of mine got a fixed gear. I thought the world was really interesting, and I thought it would be a really beautiful backdrop for the video.”

30 Seconds to Mars are gearing up for the release of their new album, titled This Is War. The album, which the band spent over a year and a half making, is due out Nov 24th.

The band’s rocky relationship with their label home at Virgin Records has been well documented, when the label filed a lawsuit against the band last summer, claiming the band refused to deliver three albums as required by its contract. The album’s title was rumored to be specifically about the band’s troubles with their label, but in a recent interview with Buzznet, lead singer Jared Leto said the album’s title was about much more.

“It’s representative of the battles that we were fighting, us with the record label, creative battles, personal demons,” Leto said. “We’ve discussed, like, is it relevant anymore? Some of the battles – obviously the creative, and the battles with the record label, have all come to pass, but I think it really still represents this record in the best way possible, so we’re sticking with This Is War…. It represents too clearly this period of time in our lives.”

He added that the title does not have to literally refer to any specific fight. “Also come the ideas about winning, ideas about compromise, about defeat, victory of course. But I think as I’ve tossed it around, it’s always been the working title for the record as well, This Is War, so it’s been important because I think it really represented the goal in a good way, a strong way.”

Prior to the album’s release on Oct. 20th, the band will be accepting cover art submissions from fans at their website http://www.thirtysecondstomars.com. The first 2,000 images submitted will be used as special edition cover art for the album.

After suing each other for alleged breach of contract, 30 Seconds to Mars and Virgin/EMI have set aside their differences and signed a new multi-album recording deal.

The major had sued the Los Angeles band last year for $30 million over 30 Seconds to Mars’ unilateral termination of its contract, in which the band cited a California law that governs the ability of entertainers to end their contracts after seven years. The band countersued the label last fall, alleging “creative accounting” that it said had resulted in unpaid royalties.

Neither EMI nor the band’s management would comment on how the lawsuits were resolved. In a posting on his band’s web site, frontman Jared Leto attributed the new contract to “the willingness and enthusiasm by EMI to address our major concerns and issues, the opportunity to return to work with a team so committed and passionate about Thirty Seconds to Mars, and the company’s dedication to changing the status quo of the business of recorded music.”

Leto went on to write that the band had debated how far to take its legal battle, and whether to put out its next album independently or continue to rely on an experienced label.

“In the future, whether there are record companies or not, whether you put your music out only through the internet or sell it from an ice cream truck, you still need the help of individuals. And at the end of it all the biggest reason for us to reunite with EMI is exactly that. The people. It isn’t for business or finance or contracts or the end of lawsuits. It is for the chance to rejoin the people who remain, who have been a part of our phenomenal journey throughout, and for the limitless possibilities of those wonderful new individuals who will be helping us along this new path.”

30 Seconds to Mars’ yet-untitled album, produced by Flood, is due this fall.

30 Seconds To Mars drummer Shannon Leto recently spoke to Rock Sound and updated us on the band’s legal dramas as they still fight to clear the $30 million lawsuit launched by their former label:

”The whole thing is bloated man,” he admitted. ”It’s just like a bee-sting or a pain in the ass, it is just another challenge and we have had them in this band our whole career. There have been bumps in the road for us the whole time and with so many regime changes at EMI and Virgin Records it does not even surprise me that this thing is still going on. It is just another war we are fighting and another war we are going to win. The whole record industry is so fucked up right now and a lot of people have their heads up their asses, I am confident that we will be fine as we have a great team around us.”

August 2008, Virgin Records filed a $30 million lawsuit, claiming the band refused to deliver three albums as required by its contract. According to the lawsuit, the band “repudiated” a 1999 contract in July. In an interview with MTV Jared Leto stated that the album ‘This Is War’ is due in late April 2009. “I think this record is about faith, about spiritual matters, and that just happens to be what we’re thinking about and talking about in our lives right now. I said when the last album came out that I wanted to destroy the first record, which I think we did. We took a dramatic turn from the first to the second, and I think this new record follows that path. It’s exciting to us, and we’re really passionate about it.”
