Following his time palling around with Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones in Them Crooked Vultures, Josh Homme is getting back to leading his primary outfit Queens of the Stone Age. According to an interview with Rolling Stone, Homme will take his hard rock band into the studio in the fall, following some festival dates in Europe. So what will the next Queens album sound like?

“I have ideas already absolutely. It’s all about wiggling hips,” Homme said. “The music is gonna go further down that strange and lovely path of [2007’s] Era Vulgaris.”

The frontman said he hopes to have the new record out by the middle of 2011. In the meantime, Queens of the Stone Age will re-release their 2000 classic Rated R in a special edition featuring live tracks and b-sides (including covers of Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” and The Kinks “Who’ll Be the Next in Line?”). The deluxe version comes out August 2.

Homme is also reinvigorating his music label, and home to Desert Sessions and Eagles of Death Metal albums, Rekords Rekords. He wants to release a box set of all the Desert Sessions records, but first the label will drop Queens bassist Alain Johannes’ solo debut, Spark. The album, dedicated to Johannes’ late wife (and Queens keyboard player) Natasha Schneider, will be released August 31.

Korn are to perform in an eerie crop circle which they helped create in a field near their native Bakersfield, California.

The group worked closely with expert circle makers on the design, which features a series of intricate circles and includes the band’s logo, and now they’ll perform in the centre of the field art.

Their 80 minute set will mark the first time a mainstream rock act has performed such a gig.

Frontman Jonathan Davis says, “The setting and the mood took us into a totally new direction musically. We took the opportunity to stretch out and experiment with the performance. I don’t think we’ll ever be the same.

“We spent a lot of time fooling around in the wheat fields and corn fields surrounding Bako when we were kids, and it gets pretty spooky out there at night. That’s where we got the inspiration for the whole thing, so we decided to have some fun.”

Footage of the concert will debut on MySpace.com on Monday (Jul-12-2010).

According to The Pulse of Radio, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE and THEM CROOKED VULTURES guitarist and singer Josh Homme told RollingStone.com that once the QUEENS finish a run of European festival dates they’ll settle into making their sixth studio album this fall. He said, “I have ideas already, absolutely. It’s all about wiggling hips. The music is gonna go further down that strange and lovely path of (2007 effort) ‘Era Vulgaris’.” Homme added that he hopes to have the new QUEENS record out by the middle of next year.

In the meantime, fans will have to content themselves with the deluxe reissue of the band’s second album, 2000′s “Rated R”, which will arrive this fall with B-sides and a complete concert included.

Homme hinted that the group has also played with the idea of performing all five of their albums in concert, explaining, “We’ve talked about how much we enjoyed when CHEAP TRICK performed their first three records and we’ve thought about doing five nights for each record. It’s been discussed — after a few shots.”

Homme has also revived his custom record label, Rekords Rekords, and plans to launch a new series of his famous “Desert Sessions” jam sessions, a box set of all the previous “Desert Sessions” recordings and the solo debut from QUEENS and THEM CROOKED VULTURES guitarist Alain Johannes. That album, called “Spark”, is due out August 31.

Staind frontman Aaron Lewis has finished work on his long-in-the-making debut solo album, but doesn’t expect to release it until after the next record from Staind arrives.

Lewis told The Pulse of Radio that he wants to finish out Staind’s current recording contract before putting out his own project. “Once Staind goes in this fall and does their final record, then when I go and do my actual solo record it’s free and clear of any record label obligations,” he said. “These days with viral marketing and everything else that you can do as an alternative means of getting music out there, we’re gonna try to do it outside the box a little bit.”

Although Lewis at one point planned to issue a live solo recording this year as a preview of the full studio effort, those plans seem to be hold for now.

The singer told Billboard that he and the rest of Staind will probably regroup after a year-long break in November to begin writing the follow-up to 2008′s “The Illusion Of Progress”.

Lewis said his solo album has a definite “country flavor” to it, explaining, “It’s acoustic guitar based and I recorded it in Nashville with a bunch of country session musicians. So it’s kind of somewhere between country and James Taylor and ‘It’s Been A While’.”

The proposed first single, “Country Boy”, features guest spots by Hank Williams Jr., George Jones and Charlie Daniels. Lewis plans to tour behind the record when it is released.

10 Years are readying their brand new full length album entitled ‘Feeding The Wolves,’ for release on August 31. The first single, titled ‘Shoot It Out’ is due out on iTunes and Amazon on July 6th. The single’s hard hitting sound is said to be a good representation of the Tennessee quartet’s anticipated new album.

10 Years began debuting “Shoot It Out” while on tour with Flyleaf during the “Unite and Fight Tour” this spring, and it instantly became a crowd favorite alongside hits such as “Beautiful” and “Wasteland.” The band is getting ready to head out on tour with Shinedown, Sevendust, and Chevelle on the Carnival Of Madness tour, which kicks off on July 16th in Jacksonville. Madina Lake’s bassist, Matthew Leone, was taken to the hospital after being beaten unconscious after trying to defend a woman in the streets of Chicago.

Matthew’s twin brother and frontman of the the band released some details of the altercation:

“i’m afraid I have some of the worst news that has ever hit our lives. It’s almost impossible to even type this update. A few nights ago, Matthew walked from my apt. a block and a half down the street to meet a friend for a drink. half way there he saw a man severely beating his wife. Being the most amazing, strong, heroic and incredible person I know.. even though the guy was twice his size, Matthew intervened. He managed to subdue this guy for a second and since his wife was beat up pretty good called the cops.. as he did so the guy jumped him from behind and beat him. This guy did things I can’t even type. After words, he and his beaten wife left Matthew unconcious on the street. Matthew is in the hospital with a third of his skull removed as we wait for the swelling in his brain to go down. I’d rather not share any additional information at this time besides the fact that he acted as a hero (as he always would in any of these situations) and is paying a horrific price. Pease send all your love and good energy and vibrations to him. I’ve been and will be next to him throughout the entire recovery process. We don’t know enough yet details about how that will develop.. but it has shocked, stunned, disgusted our best friends, family and band (which are both). The world can be evil beyond belief and as much as we want this evil eliminated, right now our hearts heads and energies need to go to my best friend, soul mate, hero, and angel, Matthew. Love you all and will be in touch as soon as I can muster up the emotional energy to reach out again. Please, be safe and peaceful as we get through this impossible time.”

Anberlin have released the music video for their song “We Owe This To Ourselves”, which is the first taste from the band’s upcoming fifth studio album album “Dark Is the Way, Light Is A Place”.

“Dark Is the Way, Light Is A Place” will be released on September 21, 2010 through Universal Republic Records.

While it is not currently stated to be on the track listing for the album, it is uncertain to whether the band has re-recorded “Feel Good Drag” for the new album.

STATIC-X frontman Wayne Static was interviewed on June 18, 2010 edition of “Uncensored Net Noise”. Here are some excerpts from the interview.

On whether there is any truth to the Internet rumors that STATIC-X has broken up:

Wayne: “Well, that’s not a yes-or-no question. It’s more complicated than that.

“Let me give you a little background.

“STATIC-X has never been a band where the four guys get into a room together and jam and write songs and all that kind of stuff.

“Here’s the way STATIC-X has always worked: I write all the songs by myself — totally and completely by myself — I give demos to the other guys, and then they add their parts to it, and then we argue about stuff and compromise and it turns out being STATIC-X. And so my whole idea was, [with the upcoming PIGHAMMER solo project] I just wanna do it by myself. I write everything myself anyway. So I’m recording everything myself — no compromising.

“This PIGHAMMER record is supposed to be a side project. And it just so happens that at the same time I’m recording this record, our contract was up with Warner Bros., so it’s time for STATIC-X to re-sign. So Tony [Campos, STATIC-X bassist] dropped out [of the band]. So Tony’s out and it’s up to me if I wanna do another record as STATIC-X — with Koichi [Fukuda, guitar] or Nick [Oshiro, drums] or whoever I want to be in STATIC-X. But Tony’s out of the picture for sure — he dropped out; he doesn’t wanna do it anymore.”

On Tony’s reasons for leaving:

Wayne: “I haven’t talked to him about it. He’s been playing a lot of childish games over the last couple of years and dropping little lies here and there about me. Like, he said that I’m doing a record with my wife [former adult-film star Tera Wray] and that’s why STATIC is on hold. And I was like, ‘C’mon, dude. I’m doing a solo record.’

“I think he’s jealous ’cause I have the hottest wife in the world. Honestly, that’s what I really think.

“But anyway, that’s the situation. I have not officially closed the coffin on STATIC-X. My plan was to do this solo record and then do another STATIC-X record. Tony decided he doesn’t wanna do it anymore, so I’m not really sure where that puts things — if STATIC-X is still gonna be STATIC-X without him. I think it could be. Right now I’m just kind of focusing on getting my solo record done, which is absolutely awesome. It’s some of the greatest stuff I’ve ever written. I’m going back and doing some singing, kind of like I did on [2003's] ‘Shadow Zone’, but it’s still got all the full-on screaming that everyone likes, too. It’s a little more electronic-sounding, kind of like [2001's] ‘Machine’ was — more keyboards and loops. And I’m really excited about it.”

On being the sole creative force in STATIC-X:

Wayne: “I’ve always tried to keep the same guys in the band for our onstage chemistry, [but] in fact I’ve actually written and produced everything that the band has ever put out.”

On whether STATIC-X will sign with a new label or re-sign with Warner Bros.:

Wayne: “I actually re-signed with Warner Bros. on my own. They’ve been really good to us and all the people over there are great; they love me and I love them. So I’m just sticking with them. So my solo record will be coming out on Warner as well.”

On a possible release date for the PIGHAMMER debut:

“I’m hoping before the end of the year. I’m guessing I’m a few weeks — maybe four, five, six weeks tops — from actually finishing recording. And then from there it takes the label three or four months to put it out, so I’m hoping to get it out by fall.”

On whether there will be any touring behind the solo project:

Wayne: “Yes, absolutely. I’ve got some people lined up. I’m gonna have my wife playing bass on it — like a hot chick bass player on stage, you know what I’m saying?! And then I’ve got Bevan Davies [drums; JERRY CANTRELL, DANZIG, COMES WITH THE FALL], who actually has played with STATIC-X twice — he’s done two tours with us when Nick couldn’t do it; he filled in a couple of times. And then I’ve got another buddy of mine who’s probably gonna play guitar. But that’ll all come in time. Right now, like I said, I’m just focusing on the recording part.”

On the possibility of STATIC-X carrying on in the future:

Wayne: “No matter what, Wayne Static will march on, and the music that I’m writing for my solo record is gonna sound very much like STATIC-X — I think it’s gonna be a little more straight to the point and a little less compromised — but I agree with you there’s an onstage chemistry with all the guys that some people may miss, but the music’s gonna be slamming, just like any of your favorite STATIC-X records, so I will go on no matter what. And we’ll see what the future brings as far as all the other guys jumping back in or not.”

Anberlin is preparing to release their highly anticipated fifth studio album on September 21st. The album, titled Dark Is The Way, Light Is A Place will be produced by Brendan O’Brien. The lead off single from the album, a track called “Impossible,” is expected to debut in the coming weeks. “We Owe This To Ourselves,” another track from Dark Is The Way, Light Is A Place, will be the main song used on ESPN’s X-Games this summer.

The forthcoming record follows Anberlin’s New Surrender, which was the band’s second album to debut in the Top 20 of The Billboard 200. “Feel Good Drag,” New Surrender’s first single, hit No. 1 on the Modern Rock charts and now holds the record as the longest-charting single in Modern Rock history. Named 2009′s “Rock Song of the Year” by FMQB, it will be a featured song on the in-store version of “Guitar Hero 6,” due out this September.

Dark Is The Way, Light Is A Place – which takes its title from a line in Dylan Thomas’ “Poem On His Birthday” – examines the battle implicit in life and in love. “Love is a friction, a chemistry,” says Anberlin’s front man, Stephen Christian. “We need to fight it out in a good way, not with threats of leaving, but to, in love, find an understanding.”

Sacramento’s DEFTONES were the musical guest on this past Friday night’s (June 4) edition of ABC-TV’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” For the telecast, DEFTONES performed “Diamond Eyes”, the title track from its latest album, as well as “Change (In The House Of Flies)” over the show’s closing credits.

Video footage of the performance can be viewed below.

DEFTONES’ new album, “Diamond Eyes”, sold 62,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 6 on The Billboard 200 chart.

DEFTONES’ last album, “Saturday Night Wrist”, opened with 76,000 units back in November 2006 to land at position No. 10 on The Billboard 200 chart.

“Diamond Eyes” was released on May 4 via Warner.

The iTunes deluxe edition of “Diamond Eyes” contains three exclusive cover versions:

According to The Pulse of Radio, TOOL frontman Maynard James Keenan told RollingStone.com on Thursday (June 10) that the band is “quietly working” on a new album that will be released “when it’s ready.” Asked if the group might possibly test out some new songs on the road this summer, Keenan said, “If it comes together, yeah, you’ll hear some new stuff. If it’s not ready, you won’t.” The band’s summer trek kicks off on June 19 in New Orleans.

Keenan hinted that the tour might include some new visuals, although he also joked, “Maybe I’ll just come out in my birthday suit. A 46-year-old naked dude running around onstage. Let’s see how that goes over.”

The singer, who’s been working with side band PUSCIFER and tending to his vineyards for the last couple of years, also said that a fourth album from his other act, A PERFECT CIRCLE, is in the early stages, explaining, “We’ve got some riffs and some music. It’s just basically playing it over and over again while driving and waiting for things to fall into place.”

TOOL’s last album was 2006′s “10,000 Days”, while A PERFECT CIRCLE issued “Emotive” in 2004.

The five members of STONE SOUR took part in a press conference earlier today (Thursday, June 10) at the Sweden Rock Festival in Sölvesborg in southern Sweden. You can watch raw video footage of the question-and-answer session in three parts below.

STONE SOUR has announced a September 7 release date for its much-buzzed-about new album, “Audio Secrecy”. “It’s probably the best thing I’ve done in a long time,” lead singer Corey Taylor recently told MTV News. “We recorded 18 songs — and knowing that every tune not only has its own identity but is damn good, I’m very, very proud of that.”

The band is giving fans a sneak preview of the album by offering a limited-time download of a new song titled “Mission Statement”. Says Taylor, “In this day and age, it’s important to be strong enough to know who you are. This song is not only a rallying cry for us, but it says everything about what this album means to us. This is just the beginning.”

“Mission Statement” is available for 48 hours only beginning today (Thursday, June 10) at 11 a.m. EST. The track can be downloaded at www.stonesour.com.

Korn are joining with others all around the world moved to keep British Petroleum accountable by boycotting the company.

“We need to do our part to let BP know there are consequences for causing something like this,” frontman Jonathan Davis said via a press release. “We want to send a message to corporations like BP so that they will take more preventative measures in the future. The more costly their punishment, the more money they will spend to make sure disasters like this don’t happen again. It’s plain and simple capitalism.”

This summer, Korn are headlining the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Fest (alongside the likes of Rob Zombie and Lamb of God). Davis is encouraging the bands on the tour to join in avoiding use of all BP oil and partnering companies for their buses and vehicles.

For Davis, guitarist Munky and bassist Fieldy, this disaster echoes back to the impoverished hometown they grew up in near Bakersfield, Calif. that was landscaped by oil rigs. Their newest video, ‘Oildale (Leave Me Alone)’ the new album album ‘Korn III — Remember Who You Are,’ details the struggle of life around oil.

Rage Against The Machine have hinted that they may record a new album following their free gig in London’s Finsbury Park.

The band played the show as a thank you to fans after beating The X Factor contestant Joe McElderry to the top spot last December.

They have now told Nme they may use the momentum to get back in the studio to make their first new album since 2000′s “Renegades”.

“I think it’s a genuine possibility,” said singer Zack de la Rocha of recording a new album. “We have to get our heads around what we’re going to do towards the end of the year and finish up on some other projects and we’ll take it from there.”

The band are set to play the O2 venue in Dublin today (June before headlining the Download festival on Saturday (12).

According to The Pulse of Radio, THE SMASHING PUMPKINS have announced a 14-date tour of “intimate” venues that will begin on July 6 in Cleveland and finish up on July 24 in Memphis. This will be the bands first live appearances since December 2008 and will also introduce new members Nicole Fiorentino on bass and Mike Byrne on drums alongside guitarist Jeff Schroeder and founder/frontman Billy Corgan. The shows will feature “a balance of classics, a few obscure ones, and new Teargarden material,” according to Corgan.

Last week, the PUMPKINS released the four-song “Teargarden By Kaleidyscope Vol.1: Songs For Sailor” EP, the first of 11 specially-packaged, limited edition EPs that will eventually collect all 44 songs from the bands “Teargarden By Kaleidyscope” album, which is in the process of being recorded.

The four songs were originally issued one at a time as free downloads, before being bundled in the extras-laden boxed EP.

The PUMPKINS are planning to invite selected fans to attend their soundchecks on the tour, with Corgan explaining, “We are going to do something unique, which is play an invite-only set during sound check of almost all new, unreleased songs. Were still figuring out a way to make it possible for some of the fans wholl be in the line outside waiting to get in for that.”

Jimmy helped leave this world an amazing gift and now it’s our job to make sure to deliver that gift to our fans. We asked Jimmy’s all time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him. Mike said it would be an honor and without question that’s what Jim would have wanted. It’s comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev’s abilities. Stone Sour have announced that their new album will be titled Audio Secrecy. The disc, which will be released this summer, was produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Alice In Chains, Rush) and recorded at John McBride’s Blackbird Studios in Nashville, TN.

Vocalist Corey Taylor, guitarists James Root and Josh Rand, bassist Shawn Economaki and drummer Roy Mayorga will perform material from Audio Secrecy on this summer’s 36-date Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival, which begins August 17 in Minneapolis, MN, and runs through October 4, where it closes in Madison, WI.

Audio Secrecy is the long-awaited follow-up to Come What(ever) May, which was certified gold, debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart, and scored three hit singles for the band. Their self-titled debut album is also gold.

Vocalist Corey Taylor says that the new album “is the summation of everything we want, everything we crave and everything we fight for. The dimensions go further than anything we’ve ever tried before. It’s metal, rock, slow, soft, hard, fast, bitter, beautiful and most importantly, it’s real. You can’t get an album like this out of a band that doesn’t exist. We’re throwing caution out the damn window.”

Jane’s Addiction debuted a brand new song, “Soulmate”, during an intimate one-off Cinco de Mayo concert last night (Wednesday, May 5) at Bardot, Hollywood in Hollywood, California.

The Corzo-sponsored event marked the official live debut of the band’s latest addition, former Guns N’ Roses and current Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan, who joins original members Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro and Stephen Perkins.

“Oildale (Leave Me Alone)”, the opening track from Korn’s new album, “Korn III – Remember Who You Are”, is available for streaming below. The CD is tentatively due on July 13 via Roadrunner Records.

Korn’s ninth offering, “Korn III – Remember Who You Are”, is the band’s first effort for brand new label home, Roadrunner Records, and it bursts at the seams with that very feeling that defined the band from the get-go.

Each song unleashes an uneasiness reminiscent of Korn’s earliest and most unbridled material, but there’s also a modern refinement that’s epic in its execution.

Tool has started work on its first new album since since 2006′s “10,000 Days”, and the group recently updated fans on the progress in a newsletter that explains:

“Members of the band are still in the process of writing new material (three days a week) . . . it shouldn’t be long before the dry-erase board is filled with a bewildering array of color-coded intros, progressions, agitatos, con sordinos, crescendos, diatonics, inversions, resolutions, transitions, variations, obbligatos, consonance, and endings — the arrangements that millions will attempt to download off the Internet.”

Singer Maynard James Keenan’s “Blood Into Wine” documentary about an Arizona vineyard is due out on September 4 on DVD.

Keenan has also been busy with his side project Puscifer.

Influential alternative rock icons Primus are back and have confirmed their first headlining tour in four years. Old friends Gogol Bordello will be joining them on the road playing such venues as the Willamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn, NY, and the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Aug 12th. More dates to come as the band refines their chops before heading into the studio to record their first album of brand new music since 1999′s “Antipop”. The new album will be released in 2011.

Primus formed in the late ’80s in Northern California, releasing their first album, “Suck On This”, in 1989. They signed to Caroline Records and released the now classic “Frizzle Fry” in 1990. As part of the alternative rock explosion of the ’90s, the band signed to Interscope and gave the world some of the biggest records of the decade, including “Sailing The Seas Of Cheese”, “Pork Soda”, “Tales From The Punchbowl” and “The Brown Album”, had several Billboard top 10 debuts, garnered a Grammy nomination and wrote the internationally loved and enduring theme song for South Park.

The rumors are true: this fall, Alice In Chains will be joined by special guests Deftones and Mastodon on BlackDiamondSkye, a monolithic triple bill that is guaranteed to be the hottest ticket of the fall touring season. Over the course of the past week, message boards across the Internet have been buzzing about the tour following a series of mysterious videos.

“Rather than launch with a traditional tour announcement, we wanted to engage the fans first,” says David “Beno” Benveniste, founder of Velvet Hammer Music and Management Group, who rep Alice In Chains and Deftones. “We gave them a cryptic clip featuring video snippets of each band and they lit up the Internet. Now there’s an entire online community talking about the tour and speculating about the bands involved. It’s thrilling to see them communicate and respond so positively to this exciting tour.”

“We’re really looking forward to touring with our friends, Deftones and Mastodon,” says Alice In Chains guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell. “Each band has its own unique flavor and the combination of all three will make for a great show and a good time on the road.”

Vocalist Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron have been rehearsing in Seattle in recent weeks as a precursor to their first confirmed reunion performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago in early August.

Reports of SOUNDGARDEN’s involvement in the annual festival had been circulating for weeks. That was the first show confirmed by the band since a New Year’s Day post by singer Chris Cornell hinted that the iconic Seattle grunge act was getting back together after a split that began in the spring of 1997.

The rest of SOUNDGARDEN’s plans, including more shows or a full tour, remain in the dark right now. Drummer Matt Cameron also has summertime commitments with PEARL JAM, of which he has been a member for 12 years.

Cornell recorded three albums with AUDIOSLAVE and three records on his own since SOUNDGARDEN disbanded, but his last solo effort, 2009′s “Scream”, was blasted by critics and fans for its urban pop production and bombed saleswise.

The other two members of the band, guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Ben Shepherd, have kept lower profiles, although they and Cameron jammed together last year at a Seattle club.

It may have been their first time on stage together in a dozen years, but Soundgarden’s reunion show on Friday dug deep into their catalog, back to their earliest, pre-grunge days. ‘This is our first show in 14 years, so it’s a lot of old songs,’ Chris Cornell said at Seattle’s Showbox. ‘But it’s not just songs that we stopped playing in 1998 – it’s songs we stopped playing in 1990.’

True to their word, half of the 18-song set dated from 1989 or before, including ‘Hunted Down,’ their debut Sub Pop single. On ‘Flower’ and ‘Beyond the Wheel,’ both from 1988, you could see drummer Matt Cameron and bassist Ben Shepherd watching their cues. If the band did seem a bit rusty on opener ‘Spoonman,’ it also made the night exciting: There was a sense of spontaneity that suggested anything could happen.

At several points Cornell explained that the evening, where the band played under the secret anagram ‘Nudedragons,’ was a ‘rehearsal’ for their Lollapalooza dates later this year. He threatened that if they ‘screwed something up,’ they would play it again. No repeats were necessary, however, and the Seattle faithful, including Eddie Vedder, sang along to every tune.

Cornell was barely out of high school when Soundgarden first formed, and at 45, he looks surprisingly boyish. Whether he was holding a mike stand over the crowd, or head banging his long hair, he appeared more comfortable onstage with Soundgarden than he has during any of his recent solo tours. His voice remains as youthful as ever, and whether intoning a deep growl on ‘Fell on Black Days,’ or hitting the falsetto on ‘Outshined,’ he was spot on.

Guitarist Kim Thayil is the oldest member of Soundgarden, at 49, and the member who had most retreated during the band’s hiatus. He said nothing onstage, but his time off only emphasized his guitar god status, as he hit every solo with aplomb. He only looked tentative on a cover of the Doors ‘Waiting for Sun,’ which ended the evening.

Cornell was the only band member to speak to the crowd, except for when drummer Cameron introduced Cornell. In introducing his bandmates, Cornell simply said, ‘here’s Matt, here’s Ben, and here’s Kim.’ To Soundgarden’s loyal Seattle fans, some of whom had followed the band from their beginnings in dive bars up the street in 1986, no further name check was needed.

Soundgarden broke up after a show in February 1997, when Shepherd threw his bass in the air before walking offstage. At the band’s first show in over a decade years, Shepherd intentionally tossed his instrument again, and the band left the stage while his Fender bass was airborne. This time around it was clear to everyone – both in the crowd and in Soundgarden – that the gesture signaled a new beginning, and not an end.

Orange County, California’s AVENGED SEVENFOLD has finished recording its fifth album for a late 2010 release. Guitarist Zacky Vengeance wrote on the band’s official Twitter profile, “There are no words that will ever describe the feeling of listening to this album while driving home alone at 4 a.m.” The group’s manager, Larry Jacobson, added, [The record is] almost done, not mixed. [It contains] some of my favorite [AVENGED SEVENFOLD] songs ever.”

DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy recently issued a statement about being tapped to work with AVENGED SEVENFOLD on the band’s new album. Portnoy filled in for James “The Rev” Sullivan, who died in late December. Portnoy said, “Even under normal circumstances, I would’ve been happy to help the guys out in any way I could as I think AVENGED SEVENFOLD are a great band…but under these incredibly sad and tragic circumstances, I must say I am truly honored to have been asked to play with them and I didn’t even have to think twice about saying ‘yes.’”

Portnoy added, “These guys are a true family and it is an incredibly emotional experience to be here with them for the first time without their lost brother. But they have welcomed me into the family with open arms and there’s a real excitement to make the record they had set out to make.”

Portnoy also said, “I am treating my participation on this album with the utmost respect for Jimmy’s memory and am remaining as true as possible to the drum parts that he wrote for the songs and the record he wanted to make.”

AVENGED SEVENFOLD announced Portnoy’s participation in their fifth album on February 17, calling him Sullivan’s “all-time favorite drummer. ”

Sullivan was found dead at his Huntington Beach, California home on December 28, 2009. The cause of death has not yet been announced.

Holy Maynard! Could it be true? Tool, who MetalSucks so appropriately called “the past, present and future best band on the planet,” are writing material for a new record, working three days a week on new tunes while frontman Maynard James Keenan continues touring the U.S. with his side-project, Puscifer. The band spilled the boner-inducing news in its latest online newsletter. The idea of a new Tool LP lends those rumors of a possible tour with Faith No More some extra credence.

“Members of the band are still in the process of writing new material and with the latest leg of the Puscifer tour nearing completion, it shouldn’t be long before the dry-erase board is filled with a bewildering array of color-coded intros, progressions, agitatos, con sordinos, crescendos, diatonics, inversions, resolutions, transitions, variations, obbligatos, consonance, and endings — the arrangements that millions will attempt to download off the Internet,” Tool’s newsletter reads.

The band explains its process: “Fast for three days and refrain from listening to any (Tool) music. Commence standard banishings. Prepare a talisman in lilac satin with figures embroidered in grey silk. Additionally, a metal lamen (or ring) should be graven with the astrological talismans of Aldebaran (yad al jawza), Rigel and Betelgeuse, and placed in a fortified Goetic circle. Begin by delivering a valedictory address to the setting sun. After butchering a cockerel and sprinkling its blood over an orange candle, begin the mysterious orisons.”

We have no idea what they’re talking about, but it will no doubt be amazing. The newsletter hints at a possible tour in the summer of 2010, which, seemingly, will touch both coasts, and there are also instructions for “(Tool) [to] open for Pink Floyd at the Royal Albert Hall, or for Rush somewhere (Neuschwabenland?), or with King Crimson at Madison Square Garden, or to perform with Muse on a rooftop in Teignmouth, Devon.” Other instructions hint at a possible DVD release, too.

Peter Steele of heavy metal band Type O Negative has died of heart failure at age 48. Steele (born Petrus Ratajczyk), the burly 6’7″ bassist and lead vocalist of the Brooklyn goth-metal band, formed Type O in the early ’90s after stints in several other groups, including the hardcore act Carnivore.

A spokesperson for Type O bandmates Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly confirmed the report to MTV News on Thursday (April 15). And according to CBS News, band manager Mike Renault sent an e-mail saying, “Peter passed away last night. As of now it appears to have been heart failure. That’s all the details we have right now.”

The band’s most recent label, SPV/Steamhammer Records, issued an online statement about Steele’s passing. “It’s with great sadness that we give our condolences to the family and friends of Peter Steele,” it read. “He died on April 14th, 2010. With his bands Carnivore and Type O Negative he achieved cult status and was loved by fans around the world. … The world has lost a charismatic frontman and a very talented person. Our condolences go to Peter’s family, friends and the members of his bands.”

Fuse metal hostess Mistress Juliya (Juliya Chernetsky) tweeted about the news on Wednesday. “Today is a very sad day in metal … end of an era … Peter Steele passed today,” she wrote. “I loved my friend … our idol … my heart is with his band and family.”

Blabbermouth.com, a site run by the band’s former label, Roadrunner Records, also reported that Type O keyboardist Josh Silver had confirmed that Steele died on Wednesday. The label’s staff posted a lengthy remembrance of Steele on Thursday.

A rumor circulated that Steele had died in 2005, but that turned out to be a publicity stunt to promote their new record, making it difficult to assess the validity of this latest report. The earlier rumor sprung from an image of a tombstone with his name and the dates 1962-2005 that was briefly posted on the band’s Web site but then removed. Steele reportedly suffered from clinical depression, reflected in the band’s doom-laden lyrics, dark image and an often morbid sense of humor.

Type O released seven studio albums, with their most recent being 2007′s Dead Again.
